The Boss
"Thought I could turn emotion on and off.
I was so sure, but love taught me who was the boss."
From "The Boss" — Diana Ross (1979).
There was a time when I believed I could control my own heart.
I could decide whom to love and whom not to love.
Whether to feel or not to feel.
Whether to hurt or not to hurt.
After enough trial and error, I realized life doesn't work that way.
That's when I began to understand something important...
Perhaps mastering the heart isn't about controlling it at all.
Perhaps it's about allowing it to feel exactly as it does.
We don't get to choose our feelings.
But we do get to choose how we respond to love, disappointment, fear, and loss.
Life doesn't ask us to control everything.
It just asks us to learn how to live with it.
With humility.
Bound to this life.
And then we may discover that the true "boss" isn't our emotions.
It's the attitude we choose and the actions we take every single day.
